Kehilat Shalom Society of Calgary

Kehilat Shalom of Calgary is an egalitarian Jewish synagogue congregation with High Holiday and weekly  Shabbat services, focused on providing a warm, intimate atmosphere for all who participate

Announcement re: High Holidays

Kehilat Shalom Calgary wishes to advise its members, and the Jewish community of Calgary, that it intends to hold this year’s High Holiday services in-person. This decision to come together physically for the High Holidays was made after careful consideration by the Kehilat Shalom Board of Directors. The congregation is currently preparing plans to conduct its services in such a manner as to prevent potential transmission of COVID-19.
Please see complete announcement below!
Click here for Shabbat candle lighting times.
Please note, that we have temporarily suspended services at the Calgary JCC.
The board is 'meeting' virtually to continue to provide for the needs of our members.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thank You
A First!

A thank-you to all our members who attended last week’s outdoor Shabbat Mincha service. We were pleased to observe congregants’ willingness to adhere to mask-wearing and social-distancing requirements. Your readiness to keep one another safe will make it possible for us to hold further events in person safely during this time of pandemic. Yasher koach!

Mark your calendars
Tisha B’Av - Megilat Eicha reading
Wednesday, July 29  9:30 PM
Location TBA

Tisha B’Av is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, where we commemorate the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash and numerous other tragedies of our history. We mark the date with a 25-hour fast, and a reading of Eicha (Lamentations) in the traditional plaintive chant, as we sit as mourners on the ground or low chairs.
We will look to hold the service in-person outdoors (weather permitting). Further details will be forthcoming.

Rabbi Cohen's Shabbat Messages can be found on our Blog Page here.

High Holidays Announcement

Kehilat Shalom Calgary wishes to advise its members, and the Jewish community of Calgary, that it intends to hold this year’s High Holiday services in-person. This decision to come together physically for the High Holidays was made after careful consideration by the Kehilat Shalom Board of Directors. The congregation is currently preparing plans to conduct its services in such a manner as to prevent potential transmission of COVID-19.
We shall adhere to best practices and reasonable precautions to make such services feasible. This may entail specific congregational requirements (e.g., related to physical distanacing and use of facemasks or shields), as well as changes to the structure, duration, and location of services. All such considerations are subject to government regulations and public health measures. We will continue to keep you apprised of our High Holiday service plans, and all related developments.

*Online Yizkor Service & Shavuot Celebration: Share Your Dairy!
Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 PM

Check your bulletin for how to join.

Our Shavuot celebration will include:

- Yizkor service in memory of our loved ones
- Musical “coffee house”/jam - all performers and musicians are asked to bring one or several songs to play, sing and share with us.  You can even share a favourite Jewish music recording!  Bonus points for any songs related to Torah and Chag.
- Torah study - as we celebrate the giving of Torah on Shavuot, it is customary to engage in Torah study that evening. Rabbi Leonard will share some learning to inspire us through the holiday.
- Share your Dairy! - It’s customary to partake of delectable dairy foods in Shavuot. We may not be able to eat at the same table right now, but we can enjoy one another’s food vicariously. Participants are welcome to eat during our celebration, and each participant is invited to present/share one special food item (or more!) that they will be having this holiday.  And if you have a recipe to share, all the better - we can compile and circulate these to the Kehila.
